As we advocate against the deportations of Iraqi Christians and the raids used to detain them, we will hear (and argue ourselves) that their deportations could lead to their death. This is certainly an essential part of the picture and highlights the injustice and inhumanity of the US immigration system. But as advocates we must be able to argue for a range of repercussions that all equally deserve our advocacy and attention. That is, being deported to poverty, violence, and joblessness is ALSO inhumane, as is simply having your home raided and being detained in front of your family and community. While examples of extreme violence often open the eyes of those who are unaware, we must continue to highlight the range of violence caused by immigration enforcement and be willing to argue that all of it is important.
